College ballplayer with bone cancer gets rare World Series opportunity

After playing competitive baseball for much of his life, Pat Wiese, a Le Moyne College senior captain, was diagnosed with bone cancer this past September. Doctors told the star outfielder he would need to sit out the 2014 season, get a complete knee replacement and endure a possible round of chemotherapy.

But before any of this happened, Wiese attended Game 2 of the World Series at Fenway Park -- and was the recipient of a pretty cool opportunity:

 


Wiese was apparently walking on the field before the game, when a Red Sox official chatted him up and asked if he'd do the honors. 

Since his diagnosis, Wiese has received an outpouring of support from friends, family and current Giants linebacker Mark Herzlich -- who beat a similar illness a few years ago:

 


 

Hopefully we see Pat back out on the field very soon:
