Rays a-buzz, shave heads for a third year

There was a buzz about Rays Spring Training on Sunday, and it wasn't just because the Red Sox were in town.

Rays players, coaches and members of the front office shaved their heads to raise awareness and funding for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation at the team's third annual "Fortune Favors the Bald" event.

Included in the "head" count were Principal Owner Stuart Sternberg, President Matt Silverman and Executive Vice President Andrew Friedman. Manager Joe Maddon was among 30 players and coaches to sit in the barber chairs beyond the right-field wall at Charlotte Sports Park.

Wil Myers decided against trimming his famous locks. Instead, the 23-year-old outfielder roamed the Baseball Boardwalk in search of five fans -- for whom he donated $100 apiece to cut their hair:

The foundation appreciated Myers' gesture, but the reigning American League Rookie of the Year wasn't quite off the hook with his manager.

"I loved what Wil did," Maddon said. "He really got involved and the Pediatric Cancer folks appreciated his role, too. But I still want to see him in that barber chair."
